Vietnam issue title warning, Indonesia end win drought

Chonburi: Regional heavyweights Vietnam emerged as group winners with a 4-0 win over challengers Myanmar, while already-eliminated Indonesia registered their first AFF Women’s Championship win in eight years against Cambodia as Group B concluded on Tuesday.

Vietnam and Myanmar - both of whom had qualified for the knockout stage prior to Tuesday’s fixtures – now have five days to prepare for Sunday’s semi-finals, while Indonesia and Cambodia’s campaigns have come to an end.

Chonburi: Thailand stormed to the top of Group A with a 9-0 win over Timor-Leste, while Malaysia kept their knockout stage hopes alive by beating Singapore 4-0 as the 2019 AFF Women’s Championship continued to take shape at the Chonburi IPE Stadium on Monday.

The group is now a battle between three teams after Timor-Leste and Singapore were both eliminated with two Matchdays to spare, with Malaysia now the only side that can challenge frontrunners Thailand and the Philippines for a top-two finish.

Monday’s results set the scene for a potentially group-defining top of the table clash between Thailand and the Philippines on Wednesday.

Chonburi: Group B powerhouses Vietnam and Myanmar sealed their passage to the 2019 AFF Women’s Championship knockout stage with a match to spare after both registered emphatic wins at Chonburi IPE Stadium on Sunday.

Vietnam made it 17 goals in two matches with a 7-0 win over Indonesia, while Myanmar continued their perfect start to the competition with a 10-1 victory against Cambodia.

The results set up a battle to top the group when the two sides meet on Tuesday, while both Cambodia and Indonesia can no longer advance to the semi-finals.

Chonburi: The Philippines moved a stop closer to the 2019 AFF Women’s Championship semi-finals with a second successive victory, while hosts and defending champions Thailand began their campaign with an impressive win of their own on Saturday.

Fresh from their opening day success against Malaysia, the Philippines brushed Timor-Leste aside 7-0 in Saturday’s early kick-off at Chonburi IPE Stadium, before Thailand found the net eight times against bottom of the table Singapore.

Myanmar, Vietnam off the mark with big wins

Chonburi: Regional heavyweights Myanmar and Vietnam showed they are likely to be among the contenders at the 2019 AFF Women’s Championship after they began their respective campaigns with commanding wins on Friday.

Myanmar put seven goals past Indonesia at Chonburi IPE Stadium, while Vietnam racked up eight in the opening half-hour on the way to an eventual 10-0 win over Cambodia.

The results created a clear gulf on the Group B table, with Friday’s winners now in pole position to advance to the semi-finals.

Chonburi: The Philippines made a winning start with a 3-0 win over Malaysia, while Timor-Leste broke through for their first ever international win with a 2-1 success against Singapore as the 2019 AFF Women’s Championship began at the Chonburi IPE Stadium on Thursday.

The results send Philippines and Timor-Leste to the top of the five-team Group A, which also includes hosts Thailand, with the top two advancing to the semi-finals.

Thailand beat Australia for fourth title, Vietnam finish third

Palembang: Thailand beat Australia 3-2 to claim their fourth ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Women's Championship title, while Vietnam ensured a third place finish after stunning Myanmar 3-0 at the Jaka Baring Stadium on Friday. 

But what made the victory magnificent for the Thais was the fact that they had to come back from two goals down before they were able to put down the aspiring young Matildas.

“It was a very difficult game, especially when we were down by two goals. I really thought it would be tough to win this tie,” said Thailand head coach Nuengrutai Sraithongvian.

“I am very proud of the players for coming back into this game the way they did.”

The Thais – three times champions in 2014, 2015 and 2016 – who had beaten the same Australian side 4-2 in the group stage would find them a totally different kettle of fish.

Several positional changes saw the speedy Kanjana Sung-ngoen being clamped down on the right while the usually explosive Suchawadee Niidhamrong had a rather quiet night at the start.
