Chonburi: Australia head coach Rae Dower has called on her young players to outperform their heroes by defeating DPR Korea in Wednesday’s AFC U-16 Women’s Championship Thailand 2019 semi-final at IPE Chonburi Stadium.
Unbeaten through the group stage, the Junior Matildas are one win away from the dual prize of a place in Saturday’s final and a maiden FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup berth, while defeat would bring both dreams crashing down.
While Australia have become a powerhouse in the women’s game, even senior national team stars like Sam Kerr never experienced the global showpiece at youth level, and Dower called on her side to break new ground by qualifying for a first World Cup.

Chonburi: Hong Song-ok is one of several players to have shone bright in DPR Korea’s stunning form in the AFC U-16 Women’s Championship Thailand 2019, but the midfielder believes teamwork is the key to their success.
The defending champions were outstanding in the group stage, winning all three of their matches with a record of 17 goals scored and none conceded.
Seven different players, including Hong, have found the net so far, and she believes her side’s even spread of both talent and responsibility is one of their major strengths.

Chonburi: Holders DPR Korea confirmed their progress to the AFC U-16 Women’s Championship Thailand 2019 semi-finals as Group B winners, overcoming Korea Republic 3-0 at Chonburi Stadium on Sunday.
A rematch between the 2017 finalists produced a similar result to the previous decider, as DPR Korea overcame their neighbours as well as challenging conditions thanks to goals from Myong Yu-jong, Hong Song-ok and Kim Hye-yong.
While Hwang Yong-song’s side can now look forward to a semi-final meeting with Australia on Wednesday, Sunday’s match was the end of the line for Korea Republic, whose group stage elimination was confirmed.

Chonburi: Golam Robbani Choton praised his players after his Bangladesh side earned a 2-2 draw in their AFC U-16 Women’s Championship Thailand 2019 clash with Australia on Saturday, labelling it the country’s best achievement in the women’s game.
Already out of knockout stage contention, and still reeling from a 9-0 defeat to Japan three days prior, few gave the South Asian side a chance at IPE Chonburi Stadium, but a committed team performance and two goals from promising striker Tohura Khatun earned them a historic first ever Finals point.

Chonburi: Australia sealed their place in the AFC U-16 Women’s Championship Thailand 2019 knockout stage, but only after a Matchday Three arm-wrestle with Bangladesh finished in 2-2 draw on Saturday.
Striker Tohura Khatun put the South Asians ahead on two separate occasions, with a pair of second-half equalisers from Claudia Mihocic and Paige Zois required to maintain Australia’s unbeaten record.
The Junior Matildas sealed their place in the semi-finals for the first time in 10 years, but it was Bangladesh who were in the mood to celebrate, as they claimed their first ever AFC U-16 Women’s Championship Finals point.

Chonburi: 14-year-old Jessika Nash has impressed many with her on-field leadership at the AFC U-16 Women’s Championship Thailand 2019, but just as impressive are the globetrotting efforts of the Australian captain’s biggest fans – her family.
More than 50 family members and friends of Junior Matildas' players have made the trip from Australia to Thailand, with the Nash contingent among the largest in the travelling party.
There are three generations of Nashes in Chonburi, with a fourth represented by a great-grandmother watching every kick of the ball from back home in Australia, as Rae Dower’s side chase a maiden Asian title.
But, as Jessika’s mother Katherine revealed, this is far from the first away day for the family, some of whom have racked up over 45,000 kilometres of football-related travel since the tournament’s first qualifying stage last September.
