Alen Stajcic takes charge of Philippines’ Malditas

Manila: Alen Stajcic has been announced as the new head coach of the Philippines women’s national team, replacing Marlon Maro on Tuesday. 

Stajcic is regarded as one of Australia’s most accomplished coaches, having led the women’s national team from 2014 to 2019, where they secured runners-up finishes in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup and were quarter-finalists in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup and in the 2016 Olympics.

Kuala Lumpur: The final 12-team cast for the greatest show in Asian women’s football is now in place after both Chinese Taipei and Myanmar secured qualification to the AFC Women's Asian Cup India 2022 on Sunday.

Chinese Taipei emerged victorious in qualifying Group A, while Myanmar’s 14 unanswered goals took them to the top of Group D, joining six other group winners from September as well as the four nations who qualified automatically for next year’s Finals. 

The stage is now set for Thursday’s official India 2022 draw, to be staged in Kuala Lumpur, where the 12 qualified teams will be split into three groups ahead of the tournament’s January 20 kick-off.

Manama: Chinese Taipei will return to the AFC Women’s Asian Cup for the first time since 2008 after they secured the final place in India 2022 with a 2-0 win over Bahrain on Sunday.

In the 25th and final qualifying match across Asia, Kazuo Echigo’s side needed only a draw to end their qualification drought, but they advanced in style thanks to second half goals from Lai Li-chin and Chen Yen-ping.

Three-time Asian champions in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Chinese Taipei’s victory means they will now once again rub shoulders with Asia’s women’s football elite, while Bahrain’s bid for a maiden appearance fell short at the final hurdle.

Bishkek: Lebanon fell short in their bid to reach AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022 but finished their campaign with a flourish in a 3-0 victory over Guam at Dolen Omurzakov Stadium on Sunday.

Their slim qualification hopes were dashed by group winners Myanmar’s earlier success against United Arab Emirates, but Wael Gharzeddine’s charges did enough to claim second place in Group D, with Hanin Tamim bagging a brace and Lili Iskandar also getting on the scoresheet in what was ultimately a comfortable win.
 
Despite their failure to reach India 2022, Sunday’s result made it Lebanon’s most successful AFC qualifying campaign, with their final tally of two wins from three matches bettering the sole previous win they achieved in qualifying for the 2014 edition of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup.
