Ikeda hails Japan’s team spirit

Pune: Japan head coach Futoshi Ikeda was proud of his team despite the 1-1 draw with Korea Republic on Thursday, a result which meant the two-time defending champions advanced to the AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022™ quarter-finals as Group C winners. 

Having kicked off their title defence with 5-0 and 3-0 wins over Myanmar and Vietnam respectively, Korea Republic were expected to be Japan’s toughest challenge.

India 2022 Quarter-final cast finalised

Mumbai: The lineup for the AFC Women's Asian Cup India 2022™ quarter-finals was completed on Thursday with five previous winners among the eight teams advancing.

Australia, China PR, Chinese Taipei, Japan and Thailand were joined in the knockout stage by Korea Republic, Philippines and Vietnam.

Thailand and Vietnam advanced as the two best third-placed teams following the conclusion of the group stage on Thursday.

Pune: Two-time defending champions Japan secured top spot in Group C of the Women’s Asian Cup India 2022™
 on Thursday despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Korea Republic at Pune’s Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex.

Seo Ji-yeon’s equaliser following a goal-mouth scramble five minutes from time earned Colin Bell’s side a point in a game dominated by the Japanese after Riko Ueki’s first minute opener put the champions in front.

Group C: Vietnam, Myanmar settle for draw

Navi Mumbai: Vietnam and Myanmar played to a 2-2 draw in their final AFC Women's Asian Cup India 2022™ Group C tie at the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Thursday.

Vietnam came from behind twice to salvage a point and finish third but will have to wait till the Group B matches conclude later on Thursday to know their knockout stage fate, with the two best third-placed teams to join the respective group winners and runners-up in the quarter-finals.

Group B: Australia down Thailand to stay perfect

Mumbai: Australia made it three wins from three at AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022™ confirming their status as Group B winners with a 2-1 win over Thailand at Mumbai Football Arena on Thursday.

While Thailand tasted defeat on the night, Miyo Okamoto’s side also advanced to the quarter-finals, where they will face Japan on Sunday, while Australia will cross paths with Korea Republic.
 
Emily van Egmond opened the scoring for Australia in the 39th minute and Kerr came off the bench to score poacher’s effort before Nipawan Panyosuk netted a memorable consolation goal.

Group B: Philippines book knockout stage spot in style

Pune: The Philippines booked their spot in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022™ quarter-finals after beating Indonesia 6-0 to finish as the Group B runners-up on Thursday.

The Malditas completed their group stage campaign with six points, three behind Australia with Chinese Taipei their quarter-final opponents.
