Round 2 - Group E: Turkmenistan 1-3 Uzbekistan

Ashgabat: Eldor Shomurodov and Otabek Shukurov combined to a devastating effect to help Uzbekistan achieve a 3-1 comeback win over neighbours Turkmenistan in Group E of the Preliminary Joint Qualification - Round 2 for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ at the Ashgabat Stadium on Thursday.

Uzbekistan’s next game sees them welcoming Islamic Republic of Iran to Tashkent on Tuesday, while Turkmenistan travel to Hong Kong for their second game of the group.

Kuala Lumpur: Matchday One of the Preliminary Joint Qualification - Round 2 for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ saw high octane action on Thursday.

There were resounding wins, hard-fought draws and heartbreaking defeats as the 36 teams began their respective campaigns across the continent.
 
The nine group winners and their respective runners-up will advance to the third round of FIFA World Cup qualifying, and at the same time seal their places at the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027.

Osaka: Ayase Ueda scored a hat trick to lead Japan to a comfortable 5-0 win over Myanmar at Suita Stadium on Thursday as Hajime Moriyasu’s side made a strong start to the Preliminary Joint Qualification – Round 2 for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup™ Saudi Arabia 2027.

Ueda was joined on the scoresheet by Daichi Kamada and Ritsu Doan as the four-time AFC Asian Cup winners and seven-time FIFA World Cup qualifiers notched up a comprehensive victory in their Group B opener.

Seoul: Korea Republic made a winning start to the Preliminary Joint Qualification – Round 2 for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ by defeating Singapore 5-0 in Group C at Seoul World Cup Stadium on Thursday.

Cho Gue-sung broke the deadlock at the end of a first half where the Koreans had more than 80 percent of possession before second-half strikes from Hwang Hee-chan, Son Heung-min, Hwang Ui-jo and Lee Kang-in gave Jurgen Klinsmann his first competitive victory as the Korea head coach.

Bangkok: China PR started their Preliminary Joint Qualification - Round 2 for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ campaign in fine fashion after securing a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Thailand on Thursday.

Sarach Yooyen gave the Thais the lead but China bounced back in style with former Espanyol man Wu Lei getting a quick equaliser before substitute Wang Shangyuan completed the turnaround in the second half.

Round 2 - Group D: Malaysia 4-3 Kyrgyz Republic

Kuala Lumpur: Arif Aiman set up all four goals and Faisal Halim scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Malaysia came from 3-1 down to defeat Kyrgyz Republic 4-3 in their Preliminary Joint Qualification – Round 2 for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ Group D opener at Bukit Jalil National Stadium on Thursday.

Dion Cools headed the Malaysians in front inside 10 minutes but quickfire goals from Kairat Zhyrgalbek and Ernist Batyrkanov as the interval approached put the visitors in front at half-time.

Kai Merk made it three shortly before the hour but an own goal from Khristiyan Brauzman and another Cools header with 13 minutes to play levelled the contest before Faisal secured a stunning victory in the 93rd minute.

Manila: Vietnam defeated the Philippines 2-0 in Group F of the Preliminary Joint Qualification - Round 2 for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ on Thursday.

Nguyen Van Toan gave the Golden Star Warriors the lead in the first half before Nguyen Dình Bac added another in the fourth minute of second half added time to seal the three points.

Vietnam face Iraq in Hanoi on Tuesday, while the Philippines will hope to bounce back when they take on Indonesia.

Round 2 - Group G: Tajikistan 1-1 Jordan

Dushanbe: Tajikistan and Jordan settled for a dramatic 1-1 draw in Group G of the Preliminary Joint Qualification - Round 2 for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™.

Both goals came in the dying minutes of the second half, with Shahrom Samiev’s 89th minute effort cancelled out by Jordan’s Yazan Al Naimat in added time.

Melbourne: Australia made a statement in their Group I opener with a comprehensive 7-0 win over Bangladesh in the Preliminary Joint Qualification - Round 2 for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ on Thursday.

Harry Souttar opened the scoring in the fourth minute before Brandon Borello made it 2-0 on 20 minutes and Mitchell Duke added a third and then a fourth in quick succession before half-time.
 
Jamie Maclaren then came off the bench to net a second-half hat-trick to put the icing on the cake for the Socceroos as they cruised to victory.
