Turkmenistan’s Miśe aiming to end 2019 on top

Ashgabat: Few fans would have predicted Turkmenistan would finish 2019 at the summit of Asian Qualifiers Group H, but head coach Ante Miše believes Tuesday’s match against Sri Lanka is a chance to do just that.

Currently sitting fourth on the table on six points, two behind group leaders Korea Republic, Turkmenistan kept their campaign alive with an impressive 3-1 win over DPR Korea last time out and are confident of earning a similar result over 203rd-ranked Sri Lanka in their FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 qualifying tie.

Miše’s men tasted a 2-0 success over the South Asians in Colombo just over two months ago, and the Croatian head coach can see a path to group leadership if they can repeat the trick on home soil.

Ashgabat: Turkmenistan ended DPR Korea's unbeaten Asian Qualifiers record with a 3-1 win in their Group H tie at the Kopetdag Stadium in Ashgabat on Thursday.

It was Turkmenistan's second win of their qualifying campaign for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023, reviving their hopes after having suffered two consecutive defeats.

For DPR Korea, the defeat is a blow to their hopes as they had gone into the tie level on top of the standings with Korea Republic on seven points.

Beirut: Captain Son Heung-min and forward Hwang Ui-jo have apologised for not putting their chances away after Korea Republic were held to a 0-0 draw by Lebanon in their Asian Qualifiers Group H match on Thursday.

It was the East Asians second draw, having been held 0-0 by DPR Korea in Pyongyang last month, but Son and Hwang admitted that the Taeguk Warriors should have taken full points against Lebanon.

Beirut: Korea Republic dropped points for the second successive match as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Lebanon in a closely contested FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Asian Qualifiers Group H encounter in Beirut.

Following on from their Matchday Four stalemate with DPR Korea in Pyongyang, Paulo Bento’s charges were unable to find a way past a resolute Lebanon defence and impressive host goalkeeper Mehdi Khalil, although the result has left them one point clear at the summit.

The draw, meanwhile, has lifted Lebanon to second and left them hot on the heels of their table-topping opponents who will now not be in action again until March’s home game against Turkmenistan.
