Valenciennes: A 95th minute winner from two-goal hero Barbara Bonansea gave Italy their first FIFA Women’s World Cup win in two decades and dealt a blow to Australia’s hopes in the opening Group C match on Sunday.
Sam Kerr opened the scoring with her first career World Cup goal, but Juventus ace Bonansea scored twice in the second half to punish a listless Australia, who now have a significant challenge ahead if they are to salvage their France 2019 campaign.
The Matildas will look to bounce back against Brazil on Thursday, knowing defeat in that match could deliver a fatal blow to their knockout stage hopes.

Paris: Head coach Yoon Duk-yeo has declared that he is looking for Korea Republic to move on as quickly as possible from Friday’s 4-0 defeat to France in the opening match of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Wendie Renard’s brace as well as goals from Amandine Henry and Eugenie Le Sommer helped France to a comprehensive Group A victory as Korea Republic regularly struggled to contain the rampaging host nation at an atmospheric Parc des Princes in Paris.
The defeat, whilst far from extinguishing Korean hopes, has left Yoon’s charges with plenty of work still to do if they are to reach the competition’s knockout phase, a point not lost on the 58-year-old tactician.

Rennes: A second-half strike from Giulia Gwinn proved decisive as Germany claimed all three points in their opening FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 clash against China PR on Saturday.
Jia Xiuquan’s side made life more difficult than many observers had anticipated for the two-time winners, but were left to rue a series of missed first-half opportunities as teenage star Gwinn sealed the win in the 66th minute.
Despite their defeat, China PR’s campaign is far from over, with forthcoming matches against South Africa and Spain to decide their knockout stage fate.
