Kuala Lumpur: Abdulrahman Al Jassim will be making his FIFA World Cup debut as the only Asian referee to implement the video assistant referee (VAR) in Russia.
The Qatari will be among the 13 referees who will act solely as VARs during the tournament, the-AFC.com takes a look at the man behind the screen.
Who is Abdulrahman Al Jassim?
At just 31, Abdulrahman Al Jassim represents the future of Asian refereeing. As a beneficiary of the Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) Project Future programme in 2009 – the predecessor of the ground-breaking AFC Referees Academy – the Qatari has seen his career ascend exponentially in the last two years.
Some of his high-profile appointments include the Finals of the AFC U23 Championship Qatar 2016, the FIFA U-20 World Cup Korea Republic 2017 as well as the FIFA Club World Cup 2017 as a Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
