Seoul: Choi Kang-Hee, coach of K-League champions Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, has been named the new boss of the Korea Republic national team the KFA (Korean Football Association) announced on Wednesday.
Choi, who guided the Motors to the final of the 2011 AFC Champions League where they lost on penalties to Al Sadd as the 52-year-old narrowly missed out on his second continental title after leading the Koreans to glory in the 2006 ACL, replaces Cho Kwang-rae in the national team hot seat.
Cho was dismissed two weeks ago after a shock defeat to Lebanon left the 2002 semi-finalists at risk of missing out on the 2014 World Cup. Although the Koreans top Group B of the third round of Asian qualifiers with ten points, they will be eliminated if they lose to Kuwait and Lebanon defeat or draw with the UAE in the final group matches in February.
