Doha: Qatar head coach Felix Sanchez is hopeful things would go better but knows what’s at stake now, as his side take on Senegal at the Al Thumama Stadium on Friday in their second FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Group A encounter.

Qatar’s first outing saw them succumb to a 2-0 defeat in their opener against Ecuador. Senegal on the other hand also fell to a 2-0 defeat against the Netherlands, making this game a do-or-die affair for both the African and Asian champions.

Japan's Moriyasu hails stunning victory made in Germany

Doha: Japan head coach Hajime Moriyasu hailed a win made in the Bundesliga after his Blue Samurai stunned four-time champions Germany 2-1 in their FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Group E opener on Wednesday.

Eight of Japan's squad are based in Germany and it was two of those players who scored the goals that sealed a historic victory for the Asian side.

Freiburg's Ritsu Doan and Bochum's Takuma Asano both came off the bench to strike late in the second half and help Japan pull off an unlikely comeback against a German team leading through Ilkay Gundogan's first-half penalty.

Japan's Sakai credits Saudi Arabia for historic win over Germany

Doha: Saudi Arabia's victory over Argentina motivated Japan's amazing 2-1 triumph against Germany in their opening FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Group E match on Wednesday.

Germany looked set to cruise to the three points after an Ilkay Gundogan penalty just after the half-hour mark only for substitute Ritsu Doan to level the tie with 15 minutes to play.

Fellow substitute Asano then turned the game on its head with seven minutes remaining when he fired into the roof of the German net at the Khalifa International Stadium to secure a historic win for the four-time AFC Asian Cup™ winners.

Al Shahrani undergoes surgery

Doha: Saudi Arabia defender Yasser Al-Shahrani underwent successful surgery on his pancreas on Wednesday after a collision during his team's shock FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 win over Argentina, the national team said.

Medical examinations conducted in Doha revealed Al-Shahrani to be in a "stable condition" after "suffering a strong clash in the head, chest and abdomen", said a statement posted on the team's Twitter account.

He was then "transferred by medical evacuation to the National Guard Hospital in Riyadh" for the operation.

Doha: Saudi Arabia's French coach Herve Renard warned his players not to celebrate for too long after their "totally crazy" 2-1 win against Argentina in their FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Group C opener on Tuesday.

The Saudis bounced back from conceding an early Lionel Messi penalty to produce one of the great FIFA World Cup shocks thanks to a Saleh Al Shehri equaliser and a sublime Salem Al Dawsari winner at the Lusail Stadium in Doha.
