Paris: Substitute Sergio Camello struck twice in extra time to settle a remarkable Olympic men's football final on Friday as Spain beat France 5-3 to take gold after Thierry Henry's hosts had earlier staged a dramatic comeback.

It had looked as though Spain were going to run away with victory at the Parc des Princes when they recovered from conceding an early goal to lead 3-1 by half-time.

Rahimi stars as Morocco outclass Egypt to take men's bronze

Nantes: The prolific Soufiane Rahimi scored twice and captain Achraf Hakimi netted a stunning free-kick as Morocco defeated Egypt 6-0 on Thursday to take Olympic men's football bronze.

Rahimi's brace took him to eight goals at the Olympics, cementing his status as the tournament's top scorer, while Abde Ezzalzouli, Bilal El Khannouss and Akram Nakach also scored in a comprehensive win at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes.

Hakimi's late strike put the icing on the cake as Morocco claimed a first Olympic football medal, and a first for North Africa.

France set up men's final against Spain

Lyon: Jean-Philippe Mateta scored twice as hosts France came from behind to beat Egypt 3-1 after extra time on Monday and set up a Men’s Football Olympic Tournament Paris 2024 final showdown with Spain.

Spain, seeking to win the gold for a second time after emerging champions in 1992 and runners-up in the last edition, edged Morocco 2-1 in the other semi-final.

Disappointed but Oiwa hopeful Japan can grow

Lyon: Japan’s hopes of winning a medal at the Men’s Football Olympic Tournament Paris 2024 were dashed after they fell to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Tokyo 2020 runners-up Spain on Friday.

It was a particularly bitter pill to swallow for head coach Go Oiwa, having seen his side come through the group stage with three wins and no goals conceded.

Lyon: Fermin Lopez scored a goal in each half to end Japan’s hopes of a medal at the Men's Olympic Football Tournament Paris 2024 on Friday as Spain handed Go Oiwa’s Asian under 23 champions a 3-0 quarter-final defeat in Lyon.

The Barcelona playmaker struck from outside the penalty area in the 11th and 73rd minutes to end Japanese dreams of a first Olympic medal since claiming bronze in Mexico City in 1968 while Spain advance to face Morocco in the semi-finals.

Mao Hosoya had a first half effort ruled out for a marginal offside decision after Lopez had put the Spanish ahead and the Kashiwa Reysol forward also hit the post as the Japanese exited the tournament.

Japan’s increasing maturity pleases Oiwa

Nantes: Japan remained flawless after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Israel in their final Group D match at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament Paris 2024 with head coach Go Oiwa delighted to see the growing maturity in his team.

It was their third straight win in a row as well as many clean sheets,  a record they share with France heading into the knockout stage. 

Despite making six changes to the starting lineup with qualification to the quarter-finals already assured prior to the match, Japan continued to shine and it was exactly the kind of development that Oiwa wanted to see.

Japan will face Spain in the quarter-finals after they beat Israel 1-0 in their final match to finish top Group D with a perfect record.
