Preview - Quarter-final: Australia v Iraq

Shenzhen: Australia are determined to raise the bar when they take on Iraq in their AFC U20 Asian Cup™ China 2025 quarter-final at the Baoan Sports Centre Stadium on Saturday.

Australia, the 2010 runners-up, cruised into the knockout stage with three wins, while five-time champions Iraq finished second in their group with two draws and a victory.

Shenzhen: The AFC U20 Asian Cup™ China 2025 is set to take another step closer towards crowning the champions following the confirmation of the quarter-final pairings on Thursday.

The last eight ties will be played on Saturday and Sunday, with the champions to be crowned on March 2.

Jordan stalemate a valuable lesson for Iraq, says Mohammed

Shenzhen: Head coach Imad Mohammed was satisfied with the performance of his players despite Iraq having to settle for a 0-0 stalemate against Jordan in their final AFC Asian Cup™ China 2025 Group B tie on Wednesday.

The draw meant Iraq finished second behind Saudi Arabia and will face Australia in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

Shenzhen: Iraq secured their place in the knockout stage of the AFC U20 Asian Cup™ China 2025 after finishing second in Group B following a 0-0 draw with Jordan at the Longhua Cultural and Sports Centre Stadium on Wednesday.

Iraq will meet Australia in the quarter-finals while Jordan were eliminated. Group winners Saudi Arabia set up a last eight showdown with China PR.

Shenzhen: Leaders Iraq will want to settle for nothing less than a win against Jordan in their AFC U20 Asian Cup™ China 2025 final Group B clash on Wednesday.

The five-time champions are leading the group with four points after defeating Saudi Arabia 2-1, which followed a 1-1 draw in their first match against DPR Korea.

Baghdad: Al Ain’s defence of their continental crown fizzled out in Baghdad on Monday as the side from the United Arab Emirates slipped to a 2-0 loss against Iraq’s Al Shorta to end their AFC Champions League Elite™ 2024/25 campaign at the bottom of the western league standings.

Mahmoud Al Mawas scored five minutes into the second half for the hosts before Lucas nodded in a late second to cap a miserable tournament for the two-times Asian champions, who completed their eight group stage matches with two points.

Al Shorta’s hopes of progressing to the last 16 had already been extinguished ahead of kick off due to Pakhtakor’s victory over Al Sadd earlier in the day but Mohamed Semida’s team salvaged some pride with a first win in the competition moving them onto six points.

Shenzhen: Iraq head coach Emad Mohammed applauded his players for their sense of responsibility after the 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia at the AFC U20 Asian Cup™ China 2025 on Sunday.

A first-half strike by Amoori Faisal was enough to give Iraq a much needed three points, and the five-time champions will now look to book their berth in the knockout stage when they play Jordan in their last Group B match on Wednesday.

Shenzhen: Iraq defeated Saudi Arabia 1-0 in a cagey encounter in their AFC U20 Asian Cup™ China 2025 Group B tie at the Baoan Sports Centre Stadium on Sunday.

The result sees the five-time champions topping Group B with four points, one clear of Saudi Arabia and Jordan, who defeated DPR Korea 2-1 in the earlier match. 

Iraq will play Jordan on Wednesday while Saudi Arabia take on DPR Korea in what promises to be a thrilling finish to the group.
