Beijing: Chan Yuen Ting is nothing if not a trailblazer. In 2015 she became the first woman to coach a top-tier men’s team in a professional championship, before having another first the following year by leading the team to the national league title. Then in 2017 she became the first woman to coach a men's side in a continental club competition, namely the AFC Champions League.
To mark International Women's Day, FIFA.com spoke at length with the coaching prodigy, who is currently in charge of China PR’s U-16 women’s team. The conversation underlined the 32-year-old’s humility, in recalling her considerable achievements to date; her intelligence, when discussing women’s place in Asian culture; and her respect, when talking about role models and mentors like David Beckham and Corinne Diacre.

Kuala Lumpur: Women’s football in Asia has made significant progress in recent years and our success is testament to the collective efforts and the years of hard work from Asia’s Member Associations to ensure the continued growth of the women’s game.
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has outlined its Vision to ensure that football remains the number one sport in Asia and our commitment towards strengthening the foundation of the women’s game by all accounts continues to play a pivotal role in achieving that ambition.
I am proud to say that the AFC is the only Confederation to have a designated day in the calendar for promoting women’s football. Coinciding with the International Women’s Day, the AFC Women’s Football Day underlines the AFC’s commitment to recognise, celebrate and honour the dedication of women in the sport.
Our women’s teams are already among the best in world football, but thanks to the passion and hard work of women across diverse roles and from different parts of the Continent, our success has extended far beyond the pitch.
From the appointment of the first women Medical Officers in the AFC men’s club competitions during the AFC Champions League East in Qatar last year, to the all-female match officials cast in the AFC Cup, as well as the female match commissioners in the Asian Qualifiers, the AFC continues to be leaders in setting new benchmarks and providing more opportunities for our women officials.

Kuala Lumpur: Ludwig van Beethoven once spoke of “seizing fate by the throat”. A little less than two centuries have elapsed since the great musician's death but his words continue to resonate among people facing up to adversity – footballers included. Notable among then is former China PR international Bai Lili, who has shaped a new destiny for herself after her playing career was brought to a cruel and abrupt end by a serious ligament injury.
It happened during the national team’s title-winning campaign at the 2006 AFC Women's Asian Cup. A central figure in coach Ma Liangxing's starting line-up, Bai excelled throughout as China stormed into the last four, where they edged holders Korea DPR 1-0. That game, however, proved to be her last.
